Digital sirens
I have to admit it - lack of time and pressing expectations from the rest of my life - have made me hear the siren call of digital. Loudly.
My first step was an environmental one. I decided to stop using color film - any color film. Black and white film I can develop with a myriad of environmentally conscious solutions - and the experimentation is enjoyable. Color is a different matter. Limiting my film meant I didn’t need as many analog cameras anymore; so I culled them - and used the proceeds to purchase a digital camera and a couple of lenses. But I didn’t buy that camera to have it collect dust - so it gets used. More and more. I don’t generally walk the dog, or go for a walk myself, without a camera - and lately it’s been a digital one. I take more photos, of more things, and in a way that’s good because I am seeing more and not worrying about the next frame.
I had a friend (a pro) who asked me why I would even use film with my ecological outlook - and being slower wasn’t a viable answer - because taking less photos does not mean you have slowed down, it just means you have taken less pictures.
I had to think about that. And as my digital camera is a manual focus rangefinder - he was right.
I will still continue to explore alternatives to normal film development- but it will be a lot less. I hope I don’t chase too many of you away who are along for the analog ride. Hell, I even named my site with analog in it.
