Who I am

My name is Lee Griffith. I was an experimental biochemist and have held positions at The Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Canada; the ETH in Zürich, Switzerland and the University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany. All throughout my career photography has followed me. I was taught darkroom technique in the late 1970s when there were few other means of developing and printing film. I have developed and printed all available types of film; black and white, C41 colour inversion film, ECN2 colour inversion film and E6 slide film.

I have been experimenting with alternative, ecologically friendly, means to develop black and white film for years. I regularly develop film in wine, beer, coffee, tea or oak leaf extract. Standard developers are of course also used. I print black and white Baryta prints in a classical darkroom with enlargers for 35mm, 120 and up to 4x5 inch negatives. I also contact print both classical large format negatives and digitally produced inkjet on foil negatives. Contact prints can be classical baryta silver halide, cyanotype or salt.

I experiment regularly and will blog upon the results here with various natural toners for cyanotypes. There might also be an old man rant or two in amongst those morsels

I use 35mm, medium format and large format cameras and I am happy to share any of my experiences and knowledge with anyone interested. Just hit me up and I will answer - if I can - as soon as I can .

Examples of my work can be found here on the website, as well as my completed and ongoing projects. You might notice that most of my projects, and my work, is a marriage of prose and photography. I hope it appeals to you.
